John Bowman Makemson (1855-1923) was the second son of Thomas Makemson II. He married Sarah Addie Holmes. (1863-1950) in the year of 1879. John was a farmer and horse trader. My Dad told me that he had seen John farm with eight horses across. No easy fete.
John and Addie are buried at the Colony, Kansas cemetery. Their children were Maude Malita (1880-1953, Harrison R. (1882-1931) and Leroy Gordan (1885-1916). There are other stories about John from Cousin Bonnie Sutterby which will be posted later.
Thomas Makemson II. (1835-1907) Was a Civil War veteran from the Illinois 125th. He served all four years of the war. Trained near Nashville, Tn. moved with his company to the Battle of Chattanooga, was in the Battle Above the Clouds on Lookout Mountain. Was hospitalized at Chattanooga. Was promoted to Sergeant. Was in the thick of the battle at Chickamauga near Chattanooga. The 125th fought very hard at the Kennesaw battlefield near Atlanta. There is a marching drum that belonged to the 125th at the visitor's center at Kennesaw. He then traveled across Georgia to Savanah and at the end of the war he marched in the Grand Parade. Shortly after the war he moved his family to Linn County, Kansas. Thomas or as some folk called him "Uncle Tom" was a farmer near Prescott, and Mound City, Kansas.
Melvina Snider (1833-1895) bore him William David(1854-1911), John Bowman (1855-1923), Sarah A. (1858-1861), Mary (1859-1861), Franklin Emerson (1862-1925), Charles Wesley (1868-1938), Ivah Ann (1870-1871), Lovilo Swift "Dan" (1872-1947), Nora Belle (1874-1952), and Jennie Dell (1876-1937).
